Challenging Behavior Special Interest Group
Welcome!
Our
Mission
The mission of ABAI is to contribute to the well-being of society by developing, enhancing, and supporting the growth and vitality of the science of behavior analysis through research, education, and practice. The mission of the Challenging Behavior Special Interest Group (SIG) is to support the advancement of clinical, research, training, and advocacy endeavors pertaining to the assessment and treatment of challenging behavior across the lifespan. This mission compliments and echoes the aims of ABAI.
Why We Are Specifically of Interest to Behavior Analysts
Challenging behaviors exist along a continuum and may be conceptualized as externalizing behaviors producing significant impact on the individual, others or the environment that can impact participation in home, school, and/or community activities. At the present time there is no existing special interest group housed within ABAI aimed at advancement of clinical, research, training, and advocacy endeavors pertaining specifically to the assessment and treatment of challenging behavior across the lifespan. This is a unique opportunity to meet the need for the ABAI membership in clinical, research, training, and advocacy endeavors.

Description of Membership:
The Challenging Behavior Special Interest Group will consist of three classes of members: voting, student, and affiliate. The CBX SIG Council may establish categories in each class. Members of all classes are entitled to the rights and privileges as they correspond to their membership category. A voting member will have the minimum of a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related discipline. The voting member will also demonstrate competence in either experimental or applied behavior analysis (as determined by the full membership criterion established by ABAI). All voting members of the CBX SIG must also hold voting status (maintain full membership) of ABAI. Student and affiliate members will have such privileges as granted by the CBX SIG Council. Applications for student status must be accompanied by proof of full-time enrollment in an academic, internship, or residency program. Interested parties can become a member or renew membership by completing a membership application. Membership applications are available year-round by emailing challengingbehaviorsig@gmail.com.
